Passport/Visas:
Check that your passport is valid (not expired) for the duration of your stay. Currently, except for Commonwealth countries, all visitors require a visa to enter Kenya and Tanzania. A tourist visa may be purchased on arrival at Jomo Kenyatta Airport for $50 for U.S. and European passport holders.
Medical:
We recommend that you be covered by a comprehensive holiday/medical/accident insurance.
Vaccinations:
Requirements may change from time to time. Ask your travel consultant or airline about current requirements. The Center for Disease Control generally recommends that yellow fever, tetanus and polio vaccines be current. Also, malaria protection is imperative. Please consult your physician about an appropriate malarial prophylactic.
Money:
Traveler’s cheques and major credit cards are accepted at most major hotels, safari lodges, large shops and restaurants. When changing money, please try to use the major banks as although all hotels and lodges have bureau de change facilities, their rates are sometimes not favorable.
Theft:
Take care of your valuables. Never leave money, Traveler’s cheques or other valuables unattended. We cannot accept responsibility for them.
Food & Water:
Please let us know of any dietary preferences or restrictions you may have and we will do our very best to accommodate. During your stay, we recommend drinking bottled water whenever possible.
Regulations:
Although animals may at times seem unconcerned by our presence, they ARE wild and ARE dangerous, therefore: DO NOT walk outside the limits of your camp without your guide. Do not get out of the safari vehicle without first consulting your guide. DO NOT provoke or unduly disturb wildlife.
Photography:
Your guide will assist you if there is any question about whether or not photography is allowed or welcomed. Make sure to carry extra batteries for digital cameras, or a good supply of film. For wildlife photography, a minimum 200 mm lens should be considered. A wide angle 28-35mm or 28-70mm or similar are also useful. UV and polarizing filters are also highly recommended for our strong equatorial sunlight. If bringing a video camera, please note voltage and electricity standards below.
Voltage and Electricity:
220-240 AC throughout East Africa. Most of the safari vehicles have a l2V cigarette lighter socket. There is no electricity in our private camps - but there is in lodges and hotels, so bring adapter plugs.
Baggage:
International baggage allowance provides for two pieces of luggage per person as per normal. The luggage weight limit for departures from Kenya and Tanzania is 20 kgs (44 lbs) per person. Internal flights in small planes normally allow 15 kgs. Therefore we suggest you limit yourself to one suitcase plus a carry on bag if possible. N.B. We recommend soft and rugged traveling luggage such as canvas or a water resistant fabric duffel type bag.
Liability & Insurance:
Tsana Tours and Travel Ltd., the company, is insured against legal liabilities arising from any injuries which might be received by passengers whilst in its vehicles.
The company liability to passengers carried in its vehicles is governed by the laws of the Republic in which the safari is taking place and no other country; and all claims are subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of the country in which the cause of action arises. If you have booked a camel, rafting, horseback or walking expedition it is your responsibility to cover yourself with appropriate accident insurance. These forms of adventure are considered a dangerous sport and you must be covered by your own insurance brokers at home. Please read carefully and sign our Release of Liability and Assumption of Risk prior to participation.
Weather & Clothing:
Lightweight clothing with a layered approach for added warmth is ideal. The climate in Kenya and Tanzania is pleasant all year round - warm sunny days and cool nights. Except during the rainy season, showers are usually brief. The atmosphere is as casual as the climate is pleasant. T-shirts and shorts will get their share of use. Subdued earth tones are preferred. Military type camouflage clothing is not permitted. It can get chilly at night so a sleeveless down vest is recommended in addition to a light sweater. A lightweight breathable wind/rain jacket, a bandanna (a hundred uses), hat, sunglasses and sunscreens, comfortable walking shoes, sneakers and bathing suit should also be on your list.
